What Bear Necessities Do?

Bare Thoughts

Helping people transition to sustainable and zero waste lifestyles by providing high-quality and earth-friendly alternatives in innovative formats for their personal care and home care necessities.

As the festive season approaches, we all find ourselves eagerly waiting for celebrations, gifts and joy. Amidst all the excitement, let’s take a moment to reflect on the impact of our celebration on the environment. Embracing zero waste practices is a meaningful way to pay homage to the planet and the spirit of the festivities. Zero waste hasbecome a super ubiquitousconcept in current times and it is increasingly gaining traction.

As against this, it is super fascinating to see how Indian culture embodies zero waste principles. It is not just a modern concept that has come up in recent times, rather, it is a concept that has long been brewing in the fabric of our culture. It is deeply rooted in the Indian DNA through long term practices that are innately sustainable. From food practices to reusing containersto hand me

downs, these customs offer lessons in reducing waste, while preserving resources.

For starters, our culinary practices are designed to minimise food waste. Our food consumption patterns emphasises the usage of seasonal and local ingredients, which certainly ensures freshness of ingredients and reduces carbon footprint incurred on transportation. When it’s mango season, there’s a plethora of dishes using mango in its various forms incorporated into various food preparations. Raw mangos go into making pickles, curries and juices concentrates, while the fruit is consumed as a whole or in a curry too!

Zero waste is seamlessly woven into the fabric of Indian culture. This festive season, let us collectively work together to embrace long standing customs. The answer for many of the modern waste issues that we are facing lies in our roots and we can cultivate those to respect our resources and tradition. By incorporating these into our festive days and the days going forth, we can build a more sustainable way of life.

Sahar is a Climate Reality Leader, a Climate Launchpad mentor and a Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum. Sahar has also appeared on Al Jazeera Stream and NDTV live news shows talking about plastic pollution

Addressing the problem

Back in 2010, a staggering 12 million metric tons of plastic waste entered the ocean, breaking down into harmful microplastics, which now infiltrate the stomachs of birds and sea creatures (which comes from products and packaging we use!)

By 2050, the oceans could harbour more plastic than fish

The urgency to address this issue becomes critical, with the production of waste outnumbering other environmental pollutants, including greenhouse gases

Everyday thousands of waste pickers segregate broken glass, sanitary napkins and needles all with their bare hands, making waste a social justice issue as much as an environmental issue
