These designs were often inspired by nature like from flowers, trees, birds, animals and daily life (farming, festivities), and folklore.

THE CRAFTING PROCESS


Kantha embroidery is known for its simplicity. The base cloth is usually cotton or silk, sometimes even recycled fabric. The process begins by drawing motifs or patterns on the fabric. Then, artisans sew tiny running stitches across the design, filling the motifs with texture and life.

The tools are minimal – just a needle, cotton thread, and fabric. Yet the outcome is incredibly detailed and creative. Common motifs include:

Sun and moon (symbols of energy and life)

Animals and birds (peacocks, elephants, fish)
